What to shop for baby must-haves?

In some families, it’s considered inauspicious to buy baby clothes before the baby is born. But waiting for the baby to arrive and then rush for shopping seems to be inviting a nightmare. With you out of action, the job will ultimately fall on your husband and…seriously; do I need to spell it out for you? Can you really see your husband carrying out the entire shopping without your help?

During my pregnancy, I had thrown all superstitions and myths out of the window and shopped for my baby beforehand. I had started preparing the list of items much in advance as per suggestions of friends and family. Also, it helps to ask new mothers as they have recently experienced motherhood and would know better what’s in the market that could be of use to you as well.

Clothing

In the first 3 months, your baby doesn’t go out much. Hence, it’s only everyday clothes that your baby will need.

  • 8 T-shirts, 4 vests, 8 rompers
  • 6 Body-Suits
  • 3 Caps, 3 scratch mittens and 3 booties/socks
  • 2 Cardigans for monsoon and winter months
  • 3 Swaddle clothes
  • Baby Washing Detergent and Antiseptic liquid

Feeding

  • 4 Bibs
  • Burp cloths – I had used small napkins as burp cloths.

As I was Breast Pumping, I had invested in the following. But in case you are formula feeding, you will also need all the items listed below except the first one:

  • Breast pump
  • Feeder bottles with nipples
  • Cleaning brush
  • Liquid Cleaning detergent
  • Thermal bottle bags

Diapering

  • Cloth diapers/disposable diapers
  • Nappy pins
  • Changing Mat
  • Baby Wipes
  • SebaMed/MotherCare nappy rash cream
  • Diaper Pail
  • Baby Diaper Bag – small and big
  • Foam sheets with attached plastic sheet

Bathtime

  • 1 Plastic infant tub. I had used a baby bather as the mesh clothed baby bather is much more convenient.
  • 3 Washcloths
  • Baby soap/liquid cleanser, shampoo. I had used Johnson & Johnson, but with so much controversy around, try MotherCare, Pigeon or Curatio.
  • Pigeon Baby soft-bristled hair brush/comb
  • 2 Hooded towels

Bedtime

  • 3 soft Blankets
  • Sleeping Bag – I used this bag to carry my little baby to the doctor, restaurant, travelling etc. as it keeps the baby covered, cosy and warm.

If you don’t want to indulge in co-sleeping, buy a crib and a mattress and waterproof mattress covers

Grooming

  • Nail clippers or scissors
  • Bulb syringe for suctioning mucous – I had bought one but till date, I haven’t been able to figure out how to use it.
  • Digital baby thermometer
  • Medicine dispenser with appropriate measurements in ml, oz and tsp.

A few more items that made my life easy

  • Baby rocker
  • Baby pram cum stroller
  • Pacifier – But never used it. It’s still lying around somewhere unused.
  • Rattles and other musical toys
  • Toy box/bin to throw all the toys into at the end of the day
  • Baby record book to enter/record all the firsts in your baby’s life.

You might want to buy an infant car seat as it comes in quite handy. I didn’t buy one, because the baby rocker doubled up as one.

Yes, it’s a huge list but you don’t have to buy all these in a day. Also, there are baby specialty stores where in you can find all these items under one roof.
